The death toll in the Siaya fuel tanker tragedy has risen to seventeen (17) after two more victims succumbed at Siaya County Referral Hospital, the facility’s Medical Superintendent Dr. Liech Adoyo has revealed.
According to Siaya County Health CEC Dismas Wakla, the two had sustained more than 50 percent burns and died while undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, the DNA test for victims who were burnt to death when an overturned fuel tanker they were siphoning fuel from burst into flames on Saturday night, July 17 in Malanga, was conducted today (July 20) at Yala Sub-County Hospital to establish their identity.
Samples from twelve relatives of the six victims who were burnt beyond recognition were taken so as to establish their kin.
DNA specialists from the government chemist took the samples from the relatives that had turned up for the exercise.
Siaya County Governor Cornell Rasanga said his government will waive the hospital bills for the tanker victims.
On the fateful day, thirteen (13) people died on the spot at the scene.
