Mathira MP, Hon. Rigathi Gachagua was this morning whisked to DCI headquarters following his arrest at his Nyeri home.
The legislator, who has been a thorn in the flesh of ruling party Jubilee over his political allegiance to Deputy President William Ruto is being question over an alleged scandal of KSh12 billion.
“The detectives, who were more than 20, did not give the reasons for
his arrest,” said his lawyer Wahome Gikonyo. He is yet to be presented to court to face any charges.
“I am not aware of the offence(s) they are intending to charge me with,” said Rigathi.
Politicians who support Rigathi say the arrest is “punishment” for embarrassing the government in the recently-concluded Kiambaa constituency mini-poll. Gachagua was one of the point men of UDA candidate John Wanjiku. The party is associated with DP Ruto, a political nemesis of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“I want to tell the people of Mathira to ignore the rumours, their MP has
not stolen anything, these are just baseless accusation to intimidate me for my
political standing,” said Gachagua.
Rigathi opined that DCI wants to hold him for the weekend. Various government agencies have in the past mentioned his name adversely in tenders involving some KSh12.5 bn.
In a previous interview with TV47, Rigathi explained the source of his wealth. The amount of money being mentioned then was only KSh5.7 bn. “These investigators are a joke!,” he said. “There is nothing like 5.7 billion. This is movement of money between personal account and fixed deposit account…… I am just a good businessman who knows what he is doing.”
