Key suspect in murder of Kiriri University student arrested; In February, he was accused of killing brother’s entire family

Police have arrested the suspect behind the killing of Christine Ambani, a student at Kiriri Women’s University of Science and Technology whose lifeless body was found on a bed at a guest room in Githurai.

Innocent Makokha, 23, was arrested on Tuesday morning, July 27 by Special Service detectives in a room that he had rented in Chokaa area, Kayole.

Ambani, 23, who was a third-year student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, was found dead on July 13, 2021, with her neck bearing deep stab wounds.

On the fateful day, Ambani reportedly left the Mwihoko-based university in the morning, to meet her boyfriend in Githurai town, 15 kilometres away.

After the ‘lovers’ met in Githurai, they booked themselves into a guest room in an arrangement the management of the facility says would only last for a few hours. This, detectives say, was because the lady was due to sit for a Continuous Assessment Test that afternoon.

“Actually, Christine had left the college accompanied by a friend, who was to have her hair plaited in Githurai, as she waited for her. However, Makokha had different plans.

The detectives pursued the case since the university noticed that Christine had been absent and was to sit her papers for the semester that afternoon. He emerged from the room later and topped up the earlier paid amount, to last them for the entire night.

“Detectives have established that it is during this night that the boyfriend turned killer, brutally murdered Christine, by stabbing her on the neck savagely and left her bleeding to her last breath,” says the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The DCI reports that after the heinous act, the suspect took the deceased’s phone and logged into her family’s WhatsApp group.

“Posing as Christine, he sent a message asking family members to send her Sh87,000 claiming that she wanted to refund her boyfriend (Makokha) the money he had spent to help her settle in the college,” adds the DCI.

Same person who set brother’s family on fire?

Preliminary investigations have revealed shocking details on Makokha’s criminal record.

On February 2, 2021, Makokha hit the headlines after he was identified as the main suspect behind the murder of his brother, his brother’s wife, and their one-year-old baby.

Under unclear circumstances, the suspect had killed the three by setting their house on fire while they were sleeping, dead in the night.

He was discovered to have been previously arrested by detectives after being found guilty of killing his brother, his brother’s wife and their one-year-old baby, by setting their house ablaze while they were inside.

The matter was investigated by Mumias based detectives and the case file forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for further action. The DPP had advised that a public inquest into the matter be conducted.

“Even before the inquest was conducted and his kin buried, Makokha attacked the grieving family again by disrupting the burial planning meetings that were ongoing and destroyed the family’s property. He was arrested, charged and remanded at Kakamega G.K Prison. However, the case was withdrawn under unclear circumstances and the suspect set free!” adds the DCI.

Makokha will be arraigned in court to answer to murder charges.
