Arson, murder? Questions as Kisii teacher couple perishes in house fire

A couple has perished under unclear circumstances in an inferno at Itumbe trading centre, Sameta sub -County, Kisii.

Florence Mogoa and Mogoa Moruri were trapped by the fierce fire in their locked house hindering emergency rescue from good Samaritans. Florence was the head-teacher at Gekongo Primary School while her husband had retired.

Residents say they heard a commotion at 3am and rushed to the couple’s rescue. They were unable to break down the door in time to pluck the pair to safety.

Area police, stationed just a stones-throw- away, and county disaster management team arrived but were helpless.

A shocked Kenya National Union of Teachers official Lucy Machuki condemned the manner in which the couple died and called for thorough investigations.

Kisii county Police Commander Francis Kooli who led his team of officers to investigate and remove the bodies was equally saddened by the loss of two lives.

He clarified the cause of the fire could not be immediately established and appealed for calm from the neighbours. He pledged further action after the outcome of the investigations.
