Kisumu County Health CEC Prof. Boaz Otieno Nyunya is dead.
Prof Nyunya died on Thursday morning, July 29 while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital. He died at the age of 65.
Confirming the passing on, Kisumu Governor Peter Anyang Nyong’o describes him as a “team player who instilled visionary leadership and gave real direction to the department.” During the short time he worked for the county (since 2020), he worked diligently ensuring the accurate delivery of Covid-19 reports.
Governor Nyong’o disclosed that he had a relationship with Prof Nyunya that was beyond work. Professor Nyong’o is a close friend of his family, he went to the same primary school and college as his brothers.
Prof Nyamu lectured at Moi University before joining the county government. He has also worked for Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and CDC. The cause of death is yet to be established.
Together with his chief officer, Dr Gregory Ganda, and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital CEO Dr George Rae, the late Prof Nyunya had embarked on a massive overhaul of the county’s health system.
“We will remember him for driving the Kisumu Marwa Health Insurance Scheme which targets the vulnerable families in the county,” says Governor Nyong’o.
