Africa on Friday, July 30 struck her first gold medal on the athletics track on day 7 of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Ethiopia’s Selemon Barega, making his maiden appearance at the Olympics, stunned Kenyans and Ugandans to clock 27:43.22, to make sure that the Eastern African country enters the medal standings.
World champion- Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei, who was the favourite to win the race, came second after clocking 27:43.63 to win silver. Jacob Kiplimo, another Ugandan, clinched bronze after clocking 27:43.88.
The 10,000m gold medal continues to be elusive for Kenyan athletes. Kenya has not bagged since the 1968 Games in Mexico City.
The Kenyan who came close today was Rodgers Kwemoi at seventh place in 27:50.06.
Barega joins a list of Ethiopian greats who have won the 10,000 Olympics gold. They include Kenenisa Bekele, Miruts Yifter, and Haile Gabrselassi.
