Three people suspected of being behind a fraud scheme targeting M-Pesa agents in Isiolo have been arrested.
Mary Wangari Hinga, 32, Samwel Maina Ndirangu, 36, and Josephine Chesang Tanui, 31, were arrested by DCI detectives at Archers Post, Samburu County, yesterday.
“The operation to trace and arrest the suspects was launched following numerous complaints of Mpesa fraud in the county, which left many operators at the verge of closing their businesses,” says DCI in a statement posted on its social media accounts.
“Detectives established that to perfectly execute their duplicitous act, the suspects approached mobile money operators as dealers in pretext of selling SIM cards and other products at discounted prices and in the process switched the phones used to effect money transactions before flushing their float,” adds DCI.
Several SIM cards were recovered from the suspects. A Toyota Vitz which they were using was also seized by police. Wangari and Ndirangu hail from Utawala, Nairobi, while Chesang is from Nakuru County.
They are now “cooling their heels in police custody awaiting arraignment in court,” says DCI.
