- Kenya was ranked position one in Africa, 19 overall.
- In spite of the good show, the athletes were largely “ignored” at the airport.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed is on the spot over the alleged poor reception accorded to Kenyan athletes returning from Tokyo Olympics.
Female athletes jetted back on Monday, while their male counterparts returned on Tuesday night.
The uproar began after a Twitter hashtag ostensibly started to laud the CS for her Tokyo success went horribly awry. #AsanteCSAmina turned into a platform for bashing Amina.
Kenyans were irked by comparative photographs of the reception accorded their athletes vis a vis those from neighbouring Uganda. While the Ugandans were heftily rewarded- including a grand reception at the airport for good measure- the Kenyans arrived at JKIA without much fanfare. This is in spite of the fact that Kenya was the top ranked country in Africa at the games.
@KambaIcon: Athletes are arriving from Tokyo without any recognition yet you are saying #AsanteCSAmina, no one in the Airport to welcome them back.
@olegunnersoldier: In Namibia, the president meets the national heroes from Tokyo, while in Kenya, the greatest marathoner of all time cuts a lonely figure as he arrives to no reception.
Kenyans was ranked position 19 globally. It finished with four gold medals, four silver and two bronze. Comparatively, Uganda had two gold medals, one silver and one bronze.
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics were concluded on Sunday.
