- MP was speaking in a debate on the ‘2022 mind games.’
- ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has demanded an apology.
Catholics have taken issue with Garissa Township MP Aden Duale’s comparison of Orange Democratic Movement party to a cult and the Catholic Church.
Speaking on a live TV show last evening, Duale, who is now leaning towards Deputy President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance said, “ODM is a cult. Nobody can speak. It’s like the Catholic church.”
The remark has seen several Catholic faithful demand an apology from the parliamentarian.
“As an @TheODMparty life member and fully baptized and confirmed member of the Catholic Church, I take great exception to the comparison by Duale of these institutions with cults,” says ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna. “Duale must apologize and forthwith respect each one’s freedom of association and worship.”
The MP was speaking on Jeff Koinange’s show JKLive. The topic was “Inside 2022 mind games.”
Duale Stirs Controversy
“We here in PAG Lurambi Parish stand with our Catholic brothers and sisters against this unprovoked religious assault!,” said Okumba Lwanda.
Reacting to Duale’s remarks, Odhiambo Walter said: “This was so wrong as a leader who respect freedom of worship. Non has talked ill about Islamic religion. You should apologize!”
Javice Otieno says, “It is so regrettable of the remarks made by Duale comparing a political party to the most respected Catholic Church in reference with a “cult”. It is abuse to the space of worship & he should apologise as well as retract his sentiments.”
Catholic or Roman?
But there are others who have taken a different opinion. Benson Kwendo says: “Duale is right…a Catholic means universal..but when you call it Roman Catholic, then it means you are under certain laws from Rome.. which is a cult… everyone is a Catholic but not Roma Catholic.”
Following the heat, the MP clarified his remarks in a tweet. “My remark was in reference to the ODM party and NOT the Catholic Church as a cult. I have tremendous respect for the Catholic Church and its elaborate structures. Am a man of faith who respects all the teachings of other religions.”
