Thika thugs-on-motorcycle nabbed in Nairobi, gun, cash recovered

In Summary

  • A motorcyle, cash and fake pistol were recovered by police.
  • The trio will face robbery with violence charges.

Police in Nairobi have arrested three suspects found robbing passers-by near Mathari Mental Hospital.

Elijah Githii, Jackson Githui and Kennedy Kinyanjui had travelled all the way from Thika, some 40 kilometres away, to conduct their nefarious activities.

A fake firearm “capable of firing”, and a motorcycle registration number KMFJ 165A were recovered from the suspects. Three mobile phones and KSh13,900 believed to have been snatched from the trio’s victims were also seized by police.

According to a report by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the three were lucky to escape with their lives after an angry mob pounced on them.

Thug’s Brazen Attacks

“The three were brave enough to stage their brazen attacks on innocent pedestrians in broad daylight, at around 4pm,” says DCI. “Police officers based at Pangani who were on foot patrol, got wind of the robberies and immediately rushed towards the scene.”

Moments before the police arrived, the thugs had given a middle-aged man a rough-neck massage (ngeta)while ransacking his pockets. When they spotted the officer, they jumped onto the getaway motorbike and sped off. “They thought they had outfoxed the officers,” DCI continues. “The deafening sound of gunfire that immediately followed, sent the thugs sprawled on the road, after their rider lost control of the ill-fated bike.”

Police had fired two rounds in the air to scare the suspects “who swallowed the bait and were now gathering themselves from their unexpected tumble, some with injuries on their faces and limbs.”

Mob Justice

Before they could gather themselves for another attempt at escape, curious onlookers including those who had been robbed earlier regrouped and descended on the thugs with blows and kicks.

The Pangani police rescued the thugs from the mob and arrested them. “Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects had travelled from Thika town to commit the robberies in city estates,” says DCI.

They will face robbery with violence charges.
