- She has been living positively with the condition and now uses her experiences to teach others.
Serah Makena, a mother of six has been living with HIV for 17 years.
She shared her experiences on TV47’s Morning Cafe.
Appearing in the studio, Makena was accompanied Grace Waruguru, Director, Kiambu People Living With HIV and AIDS– KIPEWA.
Makena tested positive for the virus in 2005 at a time when stigma was at its peak. Her husband was the first to test positive. Though he hinted this to her, she didn’t go for a test until she started falling ill, symptoms showing.
“The counselor I interacted with during the test advised us to focus on raising our kids instead of blaming my husband for infidelity,” she recalls. Her one-year-old daughter (now 17), also tested positive for the virus. She had been born with it.
