Ex-Sports CS Wario found guilty of corruption, abuse of office in Rio Olympics scandal

In Summary

  • The court said Prosecution had proven Wario had a role in the embezzlement of funds allocated to NOCK to oversee the welfare of Team Kenya at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
  • The courts established that the then-Sports Ministry officials could not account for KSh54 million.

Former Sports CS Hassan Wario was on Wednesday found guilty of corruption and abuse of office that led to loss of funds during the 2016 Rio Olympics Games in Brazil.

Wario, alongside former National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) official Stephen Soi, was found guilty of willfully failing to comply with applicable procedures relating to the management of public funds.

He was also found guilty of willfully failing to comply with applicable procedures and guidelines relating to the management of public funds.

While reading his judgment, Milimani Anti-Corruption Magistrate Elizabeth Juma said that Wario took advantage of his office when he added an additional three people to the list of Team Kenya.

Justice Juma further said that Wario had no mandate to add the three – Monica Sairo, Richard Abura, and Edan Adow, who were paid allowances.

Former PS Richard Ekai is, however, among four people who were acquitted for lack of sufficient evidence.

Wario and Soi will be remanded at Gigiri Police Station pending their sentencing on Thursday this week.
