A photograph of Janet Memusi reading while herding cows recently went viral on social media.
Janet is a Grade Five pupil at Ololchani Primary school in Transmara West sub-County.
After the photo was published, many Kenyans inquired about her. They admired her discipline and determination. Some even offered to chip in with gifts of uniforms and shoes, to ensure she continues to get an education.
Now, a top police boss is among the Kenyans who have checked on Janet’s welfare.
Francis Kooli, a Commissioner of Police and the Kisii County Commander says he was touched by the little girl’s thirst for knowledge.
According to a statement by the National Police Service, Kooli visited Janet to ascertain her wellbeing and to support her academic journey.
“Her teachers reported that she is a disciplined and hardworking girl whose efforts have paid off in her performance in school,” reports NPS. “Janet’s gesture is a boost to the girl child education campaign in the area where indices of girls’ enrolment in school have improved lately.”
The NPS did not disclose whether they donated anything in support of Janet’s education though the visit by a top police boss is certainly a morale booster.
“The National Police Service is an active stakeholder in community matters through our elaborate community policing programs and we compliment the Children Department to ensure best interests of children are always upheld,” concluded NPS.
