DCI detectives have rescued a 14-year-old girl who had been kidnapped and trafficked to Tanzania.
The Class Eight girl who was abducted from her Nyeri home on August 25, was found in Mto wa Mbu town in Tanzania on Sunday, 514 kilometres away.
The sleuths say the minor was kidnapped by a night guard identified as Alex Jonathan Malel, 19, who was working near their home.
“The school-going child was on her midterm break when the unfortunate incident happened,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) says.
On that night, DCI says, the teenager had walked out for a call of nature at around 2 am, only for her parents to find her missing when they woke up.
They filed a report at Gatitu Police Station, after which the matter was taken up by Nyeri County criminal investigations officer John Gacheru.
Girl found at guard’s hideout
As investigations progressed, DCI’s Special Service Unit sought partnership with Tanzania’s regional crime office in Arusha. Their search led them to Engarika Area- Malel’s hideout.
The sleuths found the girl at 2 am and arrested the culprit. Her family was overwhelmed with joy on finding their daughter alive.
“Tears flowed freely from the minor’s relatives and friends, as she was reunited with her distraught kin who have known no peace since her disappearance,” DCI adds.
Malel is in custody at Mto wa Mbu Police Station, Arusha, as he awaits arraignment on kidnapping charges.
