Battle of titans: Liverpool faces Manchester City at Anfield

In Summary

  • Man City won this exact fixture 4-1 last season.
  • Liverpool are the only unbeaten side in the Premier League this season.

A mouth-watering clash awaits football fans this Sunday when the two previous winners of the Premier League, Liverpool and Manchester City, meet at Anfield.

These two teams have dominated English top-flight, sharing the last four titles between them. Going into the weekend, they occupy the top two places in the league standings. Liverpool is first on 14 points, while City is on 13 points.

Meetings between the clubs have often been supercharged in the recent past with the matches turning into a goal-fest whenever the players take to the pitch. Pep Guardiola, City manager, says the rivalry has helped him whet his managerial skills.

Liverpool’s Clean Sheet

Guardiola’s men go to Anfield, a stadium where they won 4-1 in the last fixture, having conceded only one goal this season and kept five straight clean sheets. The Reds on the other hand are yet to lose a game and have scored a league-high 15 goals.

Last time out, City avenged their Champions League final loss to Chelsea by winning at Stamford Bridge thanks to a Gabriel Jesus deflected shot.

In the midweek fixture against Paris Saint Germain, Lionel Messi opened his account for the French club with a brilliant strike and beat the English champions 2-0. The loss against PSG should give them extra motivation to beat Liverpool.

Klopp’s men played out a 3-3 draw with newly-promoted side Brentford but bounced back with a 5-1 thumping of Portuguese side FC Porto.

Liverpool haven’t lost consecutive games against City since 1937.
