Agnes Tirop: Kenya’s 5000m Tokyo Olympics finalist found dead in her house

Kenyan professional long distance runner Agnes Jebet Tirop has been found dead at her house in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

Tirop, who came fourth in the women’s 5,000m at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, was found dead with stab wounds in her abdomen.

During 2021’s Roads to Records event held in Germany on 12th September, Tirop set a new world record time 30:01 in the 10km women’s race.

She broke the old record of 30:29 which was set back in 2002 by Moroccan Asmae Leghzaoui. In the event, she trounced compatriot Sheila Chepkirui to take the win.

She is a two-time world championships bronze medalist, a world cross country championships gold medalist, a world cross country championship silver medalist and an Olympic finalist.

She mainly competed in the 5,000m race as well as running in the world cross country events.
