Murdered Olympian Agnes Tirop’s husband and suspected killer arrested in Mombasa

In Summary

  • Emmanuel Rotich intended to flee to a neighbouring country, detectives say.
  • Earlier in the day, he had rammed his Toyota saloon into a trailer.

The prime suspect in the gruesome murder of 25-year-old world 5,000m record holder Agnes Tirop, has been arrested.

Emmanuel Rotich, who was in a relationship with the athlete was arrested last evening in Changamwe, Mombasa County.

Detectives believe he was attempting to flee to a neighbouring country “to evade justice.”

Rotich is believed to have killed the two-time World Athletics championships Bronze medallist by stabbing her before going into hiding.

Tirop’s Lifeless Body

Tirop’s lifeless body was found lying on her bed Wednesday morning in Iten, Elgeyo-Marakwet County.

It had visible stab wounds on the abdomen.

DCI reports that at noon yesterday, Rotich had rammed his getaway vehicle into a lorry at Mlolongo, along Mombasa Road, as he desperately attempted to flee. The suspect is currently being grilled by detectives at Changamwe Police Station.

Tirop, 25, represented Kenya in the 5,000 metres track even at the recently-held Tokyo Olympics.

Last month, she smashed the women 10km world record at an event in Germany, crossing the finishing line in 30:01. The previous record of 30:29 was held by Moroccan Asmae Leghzaoui since 2002.

Early this month, Tirop finished second in the Giants Geneva 10K race. She also won Bronze at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships in the 10,000m, and won the 2015 World Cross Country Championships.

Meanwhile, the athletics world continues to mourn her untimely passing. Said Sebastian Coe, World Athletics president: “Athletics has lost one of its brightest young stars in the most tragic circumstances.”

Writing on Twitter, International Olympic Committe president Thomas Bach: “I’m deeply shocked by the tragic death of Agnes Tirop, a young and bright talent. Her performances at Tokyo 2020 gave hope and inspiration to so many people.”

Rotich will be arraigned in court to answer murder charges.
