Former DC sentenced to 30 years in jail for violent robbery

A former District Commissioner (DC) in Tanzania has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for violent robbery.

Lengai Ole Sabaya, who once represented Hai District in Kilimanjaro region, was convicted yesterday by Arusha Resident Magistrate’s Court alongside three others.

They were found guilty on all three counts of leading a criminal gang, economic sabotage, and corruption, and handed the jail term.

Odira Amworo, Senior Resident Magistrate, said the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. On February 9 this year, the former DC and his accomplices raided a shop along Bondeni Street, Arusha, and held its owner Said Saad at gunpoint.

DC’s Dastardly Acts

Ole Sabaya, alongside his bodyguard and co-accused Sylvester Nyengu also roughed up Sombeteni Ward Councillor Bakari Msangi and handcuffed him before stealing TZS390,000 (KSh19,000) from him.

The former administrator also stole a phone from and TZS35,000 (KSh1,700) from one Ramadhani Ayoub.

In its case, the prosecution presented 11 witnesses and eight exhibits. The case started following their arrest on May 27, in Dar es Salaam.

Arusha residents flocked to court everyday of the hearing to see their former DC. He was often greeted with jeers and heckles.
