Main suspect in Olympian Agnes Tirop’s brutal murder arraigned

Ibrahim Rotich, the main suspect in the murder of celebrated athlete Agnes Tirop was on Monday arraigned in Iten Court.

Rotich appeared before Iten Law Courts Senior Principal Magistrate Charles Kutwa.

The prosecution, represented by state prosecutor Judith Ayuma sought an order to detain the suspect for 20 more days, prayers that were granted.

Magistrate Kutwa directed that Rotich be detained at Eldoret Police Station.

The court further directed that Rotich be taken for a mental assessment at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) within the 20-day period of detention.

The case will be mentioned on November 9, 2021.

Rotich’s family seeking forgiveness

The family of Rotich is now seeking forgiveness on behalf of their son.

Tirop’s lifeless body was found lying on her bed last Wednesday morning in Iten, Elgeyo-Marakwet County. It had visible stab wounds on the abdomen.

Rotich, who was in a relationship with the two-time World Athletics championships Bronze medallist was arrested on Thursday in Changamwe, Mombasa County.

Detectives believe he was attempting to flee to a neighbouring country “to evade justice.”

DCI reports that a day before his arrest, Rotich had rammed his getaway vehicle into a lorry at Mlolongo, along Mombasa Road, as he desperately attempted to flee. The suspect is currently being grilled by detectives at Changamwe Police Station.
