Liverpool, Man City headline Champions League return tonight

In Summary

  • City are third in Group A with three points
  • Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and Thiago will miss today’s match against Atletico Madrid with injuries

Champions League resumes this evening with some thrilling fixtures after the International break.

Pep Guardiola’s side Man City face Belgian side Club Brugge in what is expected to be an exciting fixture of Group A. City are expected to make a late call on goalkeeper Ederson and Striker Gabriel Jesus.

The pair was in action on Friday for Brazil against Uruguay which saw them miss their team’s Saturday clash against Burnley on Saturday, Man City won 2-0.

They flew straight to Belgium and City boss Pep said in a Press yesterday that they will be assessed later on Monday. “They will do the preparation and maybe play, maybe not,” he said.

Having thrashed RB Leipzig 6-3 and lost to PSG 2-0, the English champions are currently third in Group A. Club Brugge are second with four points and Guardiola is expecting them to pose a sturdy test.

“They have a lot of quality up front. We go there, we have four games left and 12 points to fight for to qualify for the last 16.

“This is the target and our mentality will be the same. We want to make them adjust and control the game with how we play.” he said.

Having won both of their fixtures in Group B, Liverpool are expecting to keep up their exceptional performance against Atletico Madrid.

Atletico Madrid knocked Liverpool out of the Champions league when they last met, with the Spanish side winning both legs of their last-16 tie in early 2020.

“We lost both games the last time against them,” said Klopp.

“I’m a positive person but I’m not that positive to think we have these games in our pockets.

“They are going through a fantastic spell of football, they seem to have a different rhythm, and it is a pleasure to see them play,” said Atletico boss Simeone.

“They have no fear to leave spaces at the back. They press high, play a high line, have speed.”

“They have changed players and system so we face a different animal, but not a weaker one. The core are still together, and have been for a while, and they know how to win football games.”

Curtis Jones has not travelled with his side after picking an injury while on International duty with England’s under-21 side. Thiago Alcantara remains slide-lined with a calf problem.
