Property worth millions of shillings has been destroyed after a mysterious razed down a section of Gikomba market on Wednesday morning.
The fire started at the southern part of the open-air market opposite Jua Kali section and adjacent to Muthurwa Primary School, Pumwani.
“Fire fighters from various government units including the KDF are on the ground battling to bring the blaze under control,” reports Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan.
Several Mabati-roofed sheds were reduced to ashes as traders and on-lookers attempted to salvage what they could from the raging inferno. The flea market is popular with traders in used clothes, shoes, bags and other items.
Just last August, another mysterious fire was witnessed in this market. The fire started at the Molo Line area, popularly known as Ghorofani. Likewise, it broke out at night and raged to dawn.
Gikomba Traders Sue
The same month, over 900 traders from this market sued the Nairobi County government demanding KSh20 billion in compensation over the frequent fires.
Through their lawyer Adrian Kamotho, they told the court that there has been 15 fire incidences since 2015. The deadliest occurred on June 28, 2018, when 15 people died and property worth millions destroyed.
The traders want the Nairobi County Government to pay them compensation for financial losses.
