“I love my family”- Prime suspect in university student’s murder recalls her last words

In Summary

  • A Makerere University alumni has confessed to killing his girlfriend using a surgical blade.
  • One day, the deceased first cut herself using a blade, then her boyfriend took it and cut her deeply and watched her bleed to death.

The prime suspect in the murder of a university student has allegedly confessed to having been involved.

During court proceedings on Wednesday, detective Dominic Manyi told the court that the suspect, Mathew Kirabo an ex-medical student at Makerere University killed and dumped his girlfriend, Desire Mirembe in a sugarcane plantation.

The incident is said to have occurred in July 2015, on their way to Bugiri District. Kirabo apparently picked up the deceased from her hostel in Kampala and began their journey to a shopping mall to iron out their differences.

However, their trip was cut short as the two medical students allegedly stopped midway after an argument escalated.

“Mirembe removed a surgical blade from her bag and got out of the car. Kirabo told her to say her last words and she said she loved her father, mother, and aunt and then she cut herself. Kirabo said he then cut her deeply and stood there for some time looking at her dying,” Daily Monitor quotes Manyi.

Upon arrest and interrogation, Kirabo recreated the turn of events leading to his late girlfriend’s death. To affirm his statement, he took detectives to the said sugarcane plantation where the body was found.

During a court testimony the previous week, Mirembe’s father Emmanuel Musoke revealed he was optimistic the girl would have made a good medical doctor had she been alive.

Pastor Isaiah Mbuga, the lead pastor of Christ Heart Ministries International told the court that Mirembe had approached him for advice, citing misunderstandings in her relationship.
