Virginia Aoko, the 13-year-old girl brave girl from Budalangi, Busia County, who saved the life of her mother and that of her unborn brother has been feted.

The heroic girl was among the 220 heroes and heroines who were conferred the President’s honor during the Mashujaa Day celebrations at Wang’uru stadium in Kirinyaga County.

The Class 8 pupil hit the headlines in May this year after after she rowed her pregnant mother to hospital across a swollen River Nzoia during the night.

So how did she manage to save her mother’s life?

It was around 3 am when Aoko heard a distress call from her heavily pregnant mother. Her family was residing in a camp after their village was submerged by floods.

Upon rushing to the mother’s room, her situation was not good. She was in her labour pains and even her water had broken. She could not stand the desperate look on her as she writhed in pain.

Aoko swung into action

Aoko knew that the only way to save her mother in that middle of the night was to take her to the nearest health facility- Rukala Health Centre which is 10 kilometres from the camp. To add insult to injury, the whole village had been submerged, the only means of transport was by water.

The brave girl swung into action. She helped the mother board a boat. Aoko rowed her mother to the health centre despite having little knowledge of how to operate the vessel.

But the two-hour journey was not all rosy. It was a chilly, dark night and at some point she lost direction but remained determined.

“I was worried that if I did not act fast, my mother could lose the baby and even die herself. I did not want to lose my mother as she means a lot to me,” said Aoko at the time.

On reaching the health centre, even the doctors were shocked to learn how the girl went through a lot of challenges in order to save her mother’s life.

She delivered a baby boy and later expressed joy as she narrated how her daughter had saved her from a near-death experience.
