- MP Junet insists that his words in Nyamira County over the weekend were ridiculously misinterpreted.
- He says that ODM Leader Raila Odinga has made big inroads in Mt Kenya region.
Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohammed on Tuesday reiterated that he never called for the exclusion of other communities when forming the next government.
Junet sparked a national debate after his remarks in Nyamira County over the weekend seemed to imply that if Raila Odinga wins the presidency in 2022, his will be a government of the Nyanza region people.
He insists that his words were ridiculously misinterpreted.
“What I said was totally blown out of context. It was misinterpreted and misdirected. Campaigns are local and I was just addressing the Kisii people and I was telling them that this time as the people of Nyanza we have an opportunity to lead the country. A Nyanza resident might actually lead the country,” Junet said in an interview with Citizen TV.
The lawmaker further said that the Nyanza people do not exclude anyone, giving his own example that he is a minority in the region, yet he is an elected MP.
“I was trying to bring together communities in Nyanza so that they can be together this time because last time majority of them voted for Baba while another percentage voted for the president. I was trying to show them that this time we need to stick together so that our numbers can be formidable. I was talking in Kisii land not even in Luo Land where I represent,” Junet added.
In the spirit of ‘all politics is local’, Junet says that politicians always localise their campaigns when visiting different parts of the county so that the indigenous communities can feel part and parcel of the movement.
Junet: Raila’s serious inroads in Mt Kenya
Junet, who is also ODM’s director of elections, said that Raila Odinga has made serious inroads in Mt Kenya region, and this has Deputy President William Ruto’s handlers shivering.
“…I know they are shaken because Mt Kenya is their area but you could see when Baba visited there things changed. So they never expected that. All this is to incite the people. They smell fear and the people spreading Raila-phobia in the region are not ordinary people, it is being done by people like Gachagua, Ndindi Nyoro and others.”
