- Ngirici exudes confidence that she will trounce Waiguru in nominations and secure the now-coveted UDA Party ticket.
- Although Ngirici has welcomed Waiguru to the DP Ruto-affiliated party, she insists that the governor’s defection does not change her plans of becoming the third Kirinyaga Governor in 2022.
After treating her supporters to a wait-and-see situation, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru on Tuesday formally ditched Jubilee Party, joining DP Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) camp.
Governor Waiguru announced to her supporters that she had decamped to UDA after she was hosted by DP Ruto at his Karen residence.
Waiguru was accompanied by a section of Kirinyaga MCAs led by the Majority Leader, Speaker, and the Deputy Speaker.
According to the county boss, she arrived at the decision to change political allegiance to the Hustler Nation after extensive consultation with the Kirinyaga people.
While quoting the holy writ in her decision, Waiguru says that originally she lacked wisdom on which way to take politically, but as the Bible says “when you lack wisdom you ask for it”.
“I have asked for it and I have listened and checked with many members seated here. I have asked if it is betrayal if I moved but the message that I was given by everybody is that in politics you must be very careful to stay relevant and listen to the people,” she said during the Karen meeting when she was officially welcomed to UDA.
Among high profile DP Ruto allies who were present at the meeting include MPs Kimani Ichungwa (Kikuyu), Rigathi Gachagua (Mathira), Aisha Jumwa (Malindi), George Macharia Kariuki (Ndia) and Senators Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo Marakwet) and Susan Kihika (Nakuru).
Waiguru-Ngirici 2022 battle
The governor’s entry into UDA has changed the dynamics of the 2022 Kirinyaga County gubernatorial race.
Current Woman Rep. Wangui Ngirici, a staunch supporter of DP Ruto whose allegiance has been unwavering – at least when you compare hers with Waiguru’s, has declared intentions to unseat the incumbent governor in 2022.
Although Ngirici has welcomed Waiguru to the DP Ruto-affiliated party, she insists that the governor’s defection does not change her plans of becoming the third Kirinyaga Governor in 2022.
Ngirici exudes confidence that she will trounce Waiguru in nominations and secure the now-coveted UDA Party ticket.
“There are about 10 people who have declared their interest in the gubernatorial race, and I know I will be joined by others in UDA, so I would like to say karibu to UDA to Governor Waiguru, that is where the future is. What she didn’t see, I saw many years ago. I knew what the people wanted,” Ngirici told Citizen Digital.
According to Ngirici, Governor Waiguru lost her ground immediately after she was elected.
DP Ruto will be faced with the difficult task of convincing one of them to step down for the other in the governorship race, but Ngirici insists that it will not be her shelving her ambitions.
“Waliniambia nikuje Woman Rep? Si nilikuja kwa hiari yangu? So nitaendelea na ile ya ugavana, mtu akitaka nichange, yeye aende achange yake lakini mimi sitabadilisha …naendea ugavana, na nitaenda hadi mwisho,” she insisted.
