Why Kenya Police is shutting down posts manned by less than six officers

In Summary

  • The directive came 2 hours after unknown people had raided Kirimon Police Post in Samburu Central and stole two rifles.
  • At the time, only one officer was at the post as the other three were away on other duties.

Police posts and patrol bases manned by less that six officers will be shut down, this is according to Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police Edward Mbugua.

Deputy IG Mbugua has since directed all regional commanders to close such stations by November 1, 2021 and redeploy the officers.

Further, commanders heading regions with shortage of officers to indicate the number of posts and patrol bases and the number of officers manning the station.

In a communiqué dated October 26, 2021, the deputy IG said that the move is part of the National Police Service’s plans to enhance service delivery to Kenyans.

“You are directed to recall those officers and deploy them to their mother stations. Security within the affected areas will be provided by sending officers on patrols,” he said.

Police spokesperson Bruno Shioso says that the move is also meant to consolidate “our strengths to perform better and more effectively, the directive is meant to rationalise and improve service delivery.”

Unknown people raid police post

The directive came two hours after unknown people raided Kirimon Police Post in Samburu Central and stole two G3 rifles –serial numbers A01278 and A04499 –together with two magazines loaded with 40 bullets.

In the 9:30 pm Tuesday incident, the raiders broke the door of the armoury before stealing the firearms and shot in the air as they fled.

The post had four officers but at the time of the incident, there was only one officer who had also gone to his house, leaving the post unmanned.
