Independent Policing Oversight Authority(IPOA) has launched investigations into claims of a senior police officer assaulting a matatu operator.
Dennis Mungai, one of the managers of Namu Sacco matatus in Kangari Town, Murang’a County alleged he was assaulted by an OCS.
“Nilikua nabeba abiria hapa roundabout nikamuuliza, ‘mzee unaenda?’ Akaniuliza shughuli yangu apo ni gani, nikasema mi ni mhudumu wa gari za NAMU,” the middle-aged man recalls.
The senior officer apparently assaulted him and even pulled out his pistol and hit Mungai’s face several times.
He then had the PSV operator frogmarch to the police station, where he detained him for some hours and charged him for resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer and lack of a face mask.
Mungai’s colleague filed a report with IPOA that saw Mungai get released from the station. The agency’s Chair Anne Makori confirmed that a special team has been deployed to the area to probe the matter.
