- “We currently have 59 students from Buruburu Girls undergoing treatment. All in stable condition. We thank all other emergency responders,” Metropolitan Hospital says.
- The cause of the fire is yet to be known.
A dormitory at Buruburu Girls Secondary School in Nairobi is on fire.
In a video that is circulating on social media, frantic screams are heard as students try to escape from the burning dormitory through the windows.
Others who are on the first and second floors are seen jumping outside the facility as smoke emanates.
Buruburu sub-County Police Commander Francis Kamau, confirming the incident, said firefighters were at the scene trying to put out the fire.
According to the police boss, it is still not yet clear if some students are trapped in the dormitory.
“Officers and firefighters are at the schools, but it is still too early to know what happened or the extent of the damage,” he said.
Injured students are being rushed to the nearby Metropolitan Hospital. The hospital says that the students were treated for smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire that started around 5 pm Sunday is yet to be established.
Fire incident contained
This is a statement from the school’s Parents Association chairperson, indicating that the fire has been contained…
“We confirm that the fire incident was in 1 of the 45 cubicles of the Kingdom Hostel. It was immediately contained such that even curtains are intact. The incident caused serious panic among students. Any affected student is in safe hands.
The students are in classes as the school administration address the parents who shown up and put things in order in the Hostel and the school.
If need be, there will be a communication to an individual parent/Guardian.”
