Agnes Wanjiru murder: IG Mutyambai orders reopening of murder case against British soldiers

In Summary

  • Agnes Wanjiru, then 21, was allegedly murdered by a British soldier in 2012. Her body was found in a septic tank at the Lions Court Hotel in Nanyuki, two months after she disappeared.
  • A soldier allegedly confessed to the killing, and another soldier reported it to senior officers at the time – but no action was taken.

Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has directed the DCI to reopen the case involving the murder of Agnes Wanjiru.

While addressing Kenyan on his #EngageTheIG forum, Mutyambai also directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to compile all available evidence and witness accounts and ensure that the case is concluded before a court of law.

“I am also urging the UK government to collaborate with us to conclude the case and administer justice,” said the police boss. The IG was responding to a concern by a Kenyan, Kipkemoi Kiptum, who questioned why the police had not pushed for prosecution of Wanjiru’s killers.

British soldiers joked about death of Wanjiru

It is now emerging that British soldiers laughed about the death of Wanjiru, then a mother of one whose body was found in a septic tank nearly a decade ago.

According to the Sunday Times, nine soldiers in the unit (the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment) posted two pictures from outside the hotel where Wanjiru’s body was found.

The pictured included the caption, “If you know, you know” with a crying with laughter emoji. The soldier had tagged scores of his colleagues.

The British outlet reports that most of the soldiers responded to the post, with one posting a ghost emoji while another posted the words “sceptic tank”. A third wrote: ‘Rum gaff’ – meaning ‘dodgy place’.

Soldier X, who is alleged to have been responsible for the murder, posted an emoji of an angel. Other soldiers then responded with crying with laughter emojis, followed by a cartoon of a baby crying at a funeral, from TV show Family Guy.

The Sunday Times further reports that one soldier asked Soldier X if he gets “all choked up thinking about that place” – an apparent reference to allegations he killed Agnes by choking her during sex. Soldier X answers: “Come to think of it I have had a sore throat today.”

In a previous report, the Sunday Times said that a soldier confessed to killing Wanjiru and dumping his body in a septic tank. His colleague reported the matter to senior officers at the time, but no action was taken.
