Terror convict Elgiva Bwire’s mum, brother released by abductors; Prof. Nandwa still missing

In Summary

  • The family of terror convict Elgiva Bwire freed by abductors.
  • Bwire’s lawyer Prof. Hassan Nandwa is, however, still missing.

The three persons who were abducted last Thursday in Nairobi have been released by their abductors.

Jecinta Bwire, the mother to terror convict Elgiva Bwire, her son John Musumba and her driver Willis Otieno were released by their captors on diverse times between Saturday and Sunday.

Although the three are yet to share their harrowing tale to journalists, Jecinta was reportedly freed at around 9:30 pm while Willis is said to have been released at around 5 am, Sunday.

Bwire’s lawyer, Prof. Nandwa, still missing

However, Bwire’s lawyer Prof. Hassan Nandwa is still missing. Prof Nandwa was also abducted on Thursday, with his family pleading to the government to help find him.

Nandwa went missing hours after he had reportedly visited the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) offices in Nairobi to receive Bwire, who had competed his 10-year jail term at Kamiti Maximum Prison.

Bwire was initially sentenced to life after his conviction in 2011, but his term was reduced after an appeal.

Bwire had in 2011 reportedly confessed to being a member of the Al-Shabaab terror group. There was, however, suspicion that despite staying in jail for 10 years, he was yet to reform.

Top Muslim officials, speaking at Jamia Mosque on Saturday, expressed their concerns that the government had resorted to profiling and targeting Muslim leaders in the fight against terrorism.

“The state should investigate this matter and ensure the constitutional rights of its citizens, regardless of their religious background, are protected,” Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims chairperson Hassan ole Naado said.
