In Summary

  • The teacher was reportedly picked up from school on October 16, 2021, never to be seen again.
  • The distraught family has tried grilling the husband, currently in custody at Yala Police Station, but he refuses to disclose her whereabouts.

Scolastica Akinyi Opado, a primary school teacher in Gem, Siaya County, has disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

According to reports, the teacher at Ndere Boys Boarding Primary was picked by her estranged husband from the school on October 16, 2021 and has not been seen since.

As the victim’s brother Jeremiah Opado narrates, the husband with whom her sister had separated for the last nine months went to the school and picked up Opado for their home in Kodiaga.

Jeremiah, himself a teacher at Maliera Secondary School, told Ramogi Radio that the couple boarded a motorbike to Kodiaga, where he reportedly battered her. Her whereabouts remain unknown since then.

The distraught family has tried grilling the husband, currently in custody at Yala Police Station, but he refuses to disclose her whereabouts.

“After our sister’s disappearance, the estranged husband who works with the Ministry of Agriculture in Homa Bay County disappeared and kept on dodging the police dragnet until mid-last week when he was arrested in Mbita and brought back to Yala for interrogation,” says Jeremiah.

Even a visit to all hospitals and morgues across Siaya County yielded no results.

The victim’s father Alphonse Achieng Opado has pleaded with members of the public to report to the nearest police station any information that can lead to his daughter’s location.

The estranged husband is being processed for arraignment as investigations continue as to where Akinyi could be.
