- Referee Somo, as he is popularly known entertains the crowd and players alike with his dance moves.
Ghanaian referee Alexander Coffie popularly known as ‘Referee Somo’ has gone viral after videos of him dancing during and after games he was officiating surfaced on the internet.
The main role of a referee is to make sure that the rules of the game they are officiating are being followed by all players but ‘Somo’ takes it to another level by introducing his sweet dance moves to the mix and entertain the crowd as well as the players.
“I started dancing on the pitch in Bukom. My story changed when some people filmed me,” says Mr Coffie. According to Coffie, he dances to entertain the spectators because they look bored. “I’ve been doing this since childhood just to put smiles on faces,” he adds.
To set a good atmosphere before a game starts, he likes to make jokes and amuse the spectators by dancing as well as during the half-time break especially when there have been no goals scored.
Referee Somo’s appeal to the GFA
Despite getting joy from delighting fans, ‘referee Somo’ is appealing to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to help him get a license to officiate matches and also officiate international matches in the future. He has officiated in friendly matches involving some Ghana Premier League and Division One teams.
Referee Somo is said to be a major attraction for locals in matches as his style of refereeing which combines entertainment and humorous dancing has endeared him to fans.
