Trans Nzoia family seeks help for mentally ill daughter who’s a mother of eight

In Summary

  • Ruth Lopei, a young mother of eight from Saboti, Trans Nzoia County is mentally ill.
  • She allegedly developed the condition after being slapped by a neighbour after an altercation with her child.

A family in Saboti sub County, Trans Nzoia County is appealing for government’s financial help for their mentally ill daughter.

Ruth Lopei has been deaf and mentally ill after she was allegedly slapped by a local at their Marambachi Village.

“She had gone to fetch water from the river where she got into an argument with a neighbour’s child and she reprimanded him. The child’s mother in turn slapped her, causing her ears to get blocked.

“From there she lost her senses. We took her to hospital but the treatment did not have any effect on her,” Rebecca Erupe, her caregiver narrates.

Since then, Erupe reveals that her daughter has been difficult to tame. She cannot interact with others as she habitually hits everything and everyone in her way. This has forced the family to lock her up in their maize store.

Pregnancy and Mental Health

Even in her deplorable state, Lopei is a mother of eight children, two of whom deceased, while her youngest child is seven months old. She cannot identify the men behind her pregnancies.

Dr Jacob Rotich, a medical superintendent at Sabot sub-County Hospital in West Pokot says the sexual assault incidences could have aggravated her mental condition.

“Whenever such a person gets expectant, it tends to worsen the situation because of post partum psychosis which affects every mother after delivery,” Dr Rotich adds.

Some of Lopei’s relatives have offered their help in raising her children, although the elephant in the room remains her health.

“I am pleading with the government to help treat my child. When she gets better she will be able to raise her children and also help me her mother,” Erupe says.
