A landlady in Mumias, Kakamega County, has been arrested for allegedly setting ablaze a tenant’s house over KSh800 rent arrears.

Caroline Mukolwe, the landlady, reportedly approached Teresia Ayeng, 40, demanding that she clears the rent promptly.

“She offered the landlady KSh400 pledging to clear the balance in a few days, but the seemingly impatient landlady would hear none of her pleas,” DCI says.

Mukolwe is said to have rushed back to her house and came out with a bottle of kerosene and a matchbox. She entered Ayeng’s house, doused her beddings and clothes in kerosene and lit the house.

The investigative agency says Ayeng watched helplessly as property worth KSh47,000 went up in flames while “the landlady triumphantly paced up and down the scene of the fire in jubilation.”

Officers based in Mumias have arrested the suspect and she will be charged with arson.
