Siaya man in court for allegedly defiling, impregnating teenage daughters; mother was away at a funeral

In Summary

  • A report says the harrowing events took place when the victims’ mother was at a funeral in Vihiga County.
  • The suspect is also said to have threatened to harm his boys if they revealed the secret.

A middle-aged man in Siaya County is in court for allegedly defiling and impregnating his two daughters aged 17 and 14 years.

James Odhiambo is accused of repeatedly defiling his two step daughters, who have reportedly sired children – a six-month-old and a one-year-old.

While appearing in court, Odhiambo was also charged with physically assaulting his two sons aged 10 years. The minors claimed to have witnessed one of the instances when their father defiled the girls.

The court heard that on the night of June 18, 2021, the suspect broke into the room where the two sisters were sleeping with their other siblings. Court papers say that Odhiambo, armed with a panga, then defiled one of the victims repeatedly.

The suspect is said to have threatened to harm the boys if they ever revealed to anyone what happened.

How the ‘beast’ was caught

The girls are said to have fled to their school after Odhiambo allegedly beat them up on suspicion that they were planning to let out the secret. One of the girls then confided in her teacher a day later.

The case was reported at Yala Police Station on June 19, 2021. The minors were subsequently taken to hospital for treatment and assessment.

Odhiambo was then arrested, charged and later released on bond.

Mother was away at a funeral

A report by the girls’ teacher made to court says the harrowing events took place when the victims’ mother was away at a funeral in Vihiga County.

Siaya Children’s Officer Beatrice Oguda, however, told the court that the children had reported the issue to their mother who failed to take any action. Oguda now wants the mother, too, charged for abetting the heinous act.

Odhiambo’s bond has since been revoked after it emerged that he was threatening investigating officers and the headteacher of the school where one of his children is schooling.

He will remain in remand, with the case scheduled to be heard on November 17, 2021. On that day, the investigation officers and doctor who attended to the two girls will testify.
