Six killed, 11 injured as bandits attack passengers in Marsabit

In Summary

  • The attack comes barely a day after 14 people were killed and five injured in a 12-hour gunfight between herders and suspected bandits in Suiyan, Samburu County.
  • Six of the deceased were reportedly attackers who struck the village on Wednesday night.

Six people were on Thursday evening killed and 11 others injured after suspected bandits attacked a lorry in Marsabit.

According to police, the bandits attacked passengers who were on-board a lorry travelling from Marsabit town to Bardassa Manyatta.

In the incident that occurred around 6 pm, the six died on the spot while the injured were rushed to Marsabit County Referral Hospital.

“Police are pursuing the bandits who disappeared after the attack,” says the National Police Service.

Marsabit Governor Mohamud Ali described the perpetrators as “enemies of progress who don’t want the county to prosper economically.”

“Clearly this is a well calculated move engineered to inflict the highest amount of pain on the members of the Borana Community and to slow down the activities of the county government so that we cannot make any economic progress. Whenever there are activities that we plan, then the executors of these terrible acts normally move into action,” he said.

The county boss now wants security agencies to re-strategise and address the security challenges afflicting the county.
