Former ‘Soja’ mints KSh2 million monthly after starting own security firm

In Summary

  • Duncan Kibet worked as a security guard for five years before starting his security firm
  • He earns KSh 2M monthly from the firm

Not too long ago, Duncan Kibet could barely fend for his family. He was earning only KSh 5,500 per month. But now, he rakes in KSh2 million monthly as a security firm owner.

Kibet was a Rungu-wielding ‘soja’ at a hotel in Nakuru. He worked there for five years. Pushed to the brink, he took a leap of faith and started his own firm – Dango Five Security Services Ltd.

“My first client paid me KSh8,000 (per guard). I paid the guard KSh5,000 salary leaving me with KSh 3,000,” he told TV47. “I started marketing my firm by word of mouth, walking from building-to-building.”

Ten years later, his firm now employs 200 guards. They are deployed in various places notably Nakuru, Nairobi, Baringo and Eldoret. He puts his current net worth at KSh10 million.

‘Security Firm’ co-Founder

Kibet is married to Flora Wanjiru. They met when he was a ‘Soja’. Wanjiru advises the youth to pursue their dreams: “As long as you have a vision, you have a chance of rising from your current state.”
