- DP Ruto’s rally in Kondele, Kisumu, was on Wednesday marred by chaos.
- Kondele chaos: Kenyans elicited mixed reactions, with some speculating that it was stage-managed.
Following an outrage after DP Ruto’s rally in Kondele, Kisumu County was disrupted, National Police Service says campaign funds caused it all.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Bruno Shioso, NPS Spokesperson said DP Ruto was advised to skip rallies in affected areas.
“Based on intelligence gathered, there was tension within Kondele owing to alleged distribution of campaign logistical funds amongst local groups.
“During the rally, violence erupted among the local agitated groups who engaged in stone throwing and other unruly behaviour,” Shioso stated.
Consequently, police officers were dispatched and had to lob teargas at the crowds to allow DP Ruto and his convoy safely vacate the area.
“No injuries were reported or noted. Some vehicles were destroyed,” NPS statement adds.
Ruto arrived in Kisumu on Tuesday for a three-day tour in Nyanza region. He met grassroot leaders on Tuesday, ahead of his today’s rally that was marred by chaos in Kondele.
On Thursday, he is expected to visit Homa Bay and Migori County on Friday where he will be received by Governor Okoth Obado.
Earlier, Kenyans elicited mixed reactions on the incident, with some speculating it was all planned, while others faulted the Luo community for being hostile.
Kondele chaos: Kenyans elicit reactions
Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen says, “Violence is a language of cowards especially when they sense defeat. This isn’t who we are as a country. By&large the people of Nyanza are peace-loving. A few elements threatened by the wave of change shouldn’t lead to generalization. Ours is to unite our nation from the bottom up.”
Lawyer Steve Ogolla says, “Kondele youth should get a grip on themselves. By stoning DP Ruto’s motorcade, you are, in fact, decampaigning and reversing Raila Odinga’s support across the country.”
Aoko Otieno, on her part, tweeted; That Raila can have a peaceful rally in Eldoret while our indoctrinated, jobless funks in Kondele cannot let DP Ruto say his stuff and go, is an augury of why the ultimate power has eluded my community. You threw eggs at Kenyatta in 1969, u are still throwing stones, to what end?”
@FMuliKE: “Any sane person will condemn the violence in Kondele, Kisumu, whether it was sponsored by DP Ruto himself or local politicians. This is not the way we want to do our politics as a country. We are headed the wrong way!”

DP Ruto condemned the same, urging youth to not fall into the trap of being used as violence puppets.
“Let us not use our children to throw stones. Kisumu hii ni Kenya. Na Kisumu hii tutahakikisha tumekomboa Kisumu kutoka mambo ya mawe,” the DP added.
