Police in Kilungu, Makueni County, have launched a manhunt for a nurse who has allegedly been molesting female patients under his care at a local hospital.
The matter came into the limelight late last month when the nurse attempted to molest a Form Four student.
Reports indicate that the student had sought treatment at the facility for an undisclosed illness when the nurse attempted to force himself on her. He had reportedly attempted to remove her inner wear but stopped when she screamed.
The incident, says Kilungu sub-County Police Commander Antony Nderitu, happened on September 23. But it was not until a month later – on October 22- that the girl’s mother filed a formal complaint with police.
I was called on September 24 from the school and informed that my daughter was sick,” the distraught mother told a local newspaper. “I went to the school the following day and found that she had been admitted to one of the female wards.”
The girl revealed that the nurse had even given her his phone number after his mission aborted.
Upon raising the matter with the school and hospital administration, the school allowed the student to leave and seek further medical attention. But she was suffering psychological trauma from the near-rape ordeal.
“When we went back home, I was forced to take her to a psychologist as the incident traumatised her,” the mother told The Standard.
The school also took up the matter with the hospital administration, prompting the issuance of an apology letter. “The management is very sorry for the incident,” said the letter.
The fugitive nurse had worked at the facility for two-and-a-half years.
Officer Nderitu says police are determined to arrest him and bring him to justice.
