Eldama Ravine: Passengers stranded for hours as irate residents barricade road, light bonfires in land row

In Summary

  • The residents accuse Lang’at of being desperate to get money by all means after selling a large chunk of his land.
  • Lang’at, however, insists that the land which the road sits on was hived off from his ancestral land.

Residents of Muserechi area in Eldama Ravine, Baringo County, staged demonstrations to protest against a private developer encroaching on road access.

Transport was paralysed for the better part of Tuesday morning as irate residents barricaded the Eldama Ravine-Nakuru Highway, following the closure of Orinie-Muserechi road.

Jackson Lang’at, the residents say, has fenced off a section of the road claiming that it passes through his farm despite the road being used for over 40 years.

The section of the road in question borders Nakuru and Baringo counties. Social amenities such as schools, hospitals, and a children’s home border the road that is now closed.

Police were forced to intervene and re-open the road as passengers were stranded for more than four hours following the demonstrations that turned violent.

The residents accuse Lang’at of being desperate to get money by all means after selling a large chunk of his land.

Lang’at, however, accuses the national government and the community of not consulting him, insisting the road was hived off from his ancestral land. He says the road will remain closed if he is not compensated.

The road, which is now under Kenya Rural Roads Authority, was set to be improved. The money allocated by the government over the project is believed to be behind the latest tussle.

Eldama Ravine Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Omar Ali says he will convene a meeting between officers from Baringo and Nakuru counties to sort out the impasse and ensure normalcy resumes.
