French Ligue 1 club, Olympique Lyonnais, have confirmed the formalisation of a new three-season technical cooperation with Rova Sports Academy based in Nairobi, Kenya.
The club, which won seven successive league titles between 2001 and 2008, confirmed the partnership through a statement on their website.
An excerpt from the statement reads, “Eager to place football at the heart of its expertise, the Kenyan academy has chosen to ask Olympique Lyonnais to continue developing its elite program.”
Speaking on the partnership, Rova Sports Academy CEO Rose Maghas said, “I am extremely proud of this partnership signed between Rova Sports Academy and Olympique Lyonnais, which will allow us to benefit from the expertise of one of the best training clubs in the world.”
Why Rova Sports Academy was launched
The academy was launched in 2019 “as a private multisport academy with the aim of revealing the Kenyan athletes of tomorrow.”
Based on the American model of education, Rova Sports Academy offers an excellent “sport-study” project to support the best young talents from 10 to 17 years old to the top professional level.
Lyon are one of the most supported clubs in France and are known for young talents coming through the club’s academy. Notable names to play for them include Karim Benzema, Michael Essien, Alexander Lacazette, Hugo Lloris just to name a few.
This latest collaboration, which lasts till 2024, is the first involving the club in the region after Lebanon, Senegal, Vietnam, China, Brazil, Morocco, the United States and Portugal.
