A family in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, is grieving following the death of their one-year-old baby in a pit latrine.
The deceased, Brian Macharia, was playing outside their house in Gakoe village when his mother, Lucy Njeri, heard him screaming and rushed outside.
Njeri apparently found the child on the verge of falling into the latrine, although efforts to rescue him were futile as he fell seconds before she could hold him back.
“I was with him when he was playing outside and only minutes after I entered the house, he crawled to the toilet. When I went to rescue him, his head was already inside the toilet hole and he slipped and fell upon my arrival,” the child’s mother narrates.
Kiambu County fire brigade and emergency team retrieved the body. It was transferred to General Kago Mortuary in Thika as police begin investigations into the shocking incident.
