Drama as mother of detained MP storms parliament, demands audience with speaker

Mother of a detained MP caused drama on Tuesday after she stormed the Ugandan Parliament, demanding the release of her son.

Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirnya’s mother, Sanyu Nakajumba, forced her way into parliament to petition Speaker Jacob Oulanyah about her son’s debilitating health.

While insisting on her son’s innocence, a tearful Nakajumba had earlier staged a peaceful protest along Parliamentary Avenue demanding to meet the speaker.

Nakajumba also sought the presidential pardon on Ssegirinya whom she says needs an immediate release in order to seek better treatment.

The mother said she was on Monday denied entry into the parliament buildings necessitating her return today.

The legislator and four others were rearrested and remanded after being granted bail by the Masaka High Court. The Director of Public Prosecutions told the court that enough evidence had been gathered to pin the suspects on four counts of murder, two of attempted murder, terrorism, and abetting terrorism – crimes said to have been committed in greater Masaka between January and August 2021.

Ssegirinya and his Makindye West counterpart Allan Sewanyana are currently on remand on other charges.

Detained MP incited public into possible genocide

According to the charge sheet, Ssegirinya is accused of posting on his social media fun page a message allegedly calculated to incite the public against a section or group of Ugandan population while relating it to the 1994 Rwandan Genocide.

“I am warning those who are trying to assassinate Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu that what will happen will be forty times worse than the 1994 Rwandan genocide,” the post read in part.

Their lawyers led by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and Kampala Woman MP Shamim Malende describes the said charges as politically motivated.
