Police in Kitale are investigating the circumstances surrounding the mysterious death of a businessman who rose to infamy after shooting a woman she mistook for fugitive killer cop Caroline Kangogo last July.
Kennedy Muyundo, 58, was found dead in his Kiminini home, Trans Nzoia County, yesterday. He was half naked, the body lying on his bedroom floor.
At the height of a national manhunt for Kangogo (who died by suicide in July), Muyundo, the proprietor of Iroko Boulevard Hotel in Kitale town and a licensed gun owner allegedly shot Phanice Chemutai Juma, 20 on suspicion that she was Kangogo.
The businessman was subsequently arrested and charged with attempted murder.
Reports indicate that workers at the hotel noticed something amiss when their boss failed to make rounds at the workplace as was customary. He had gone home at 12am the previous night (Monday). He was not reachable on mobile phone.
“They (workers) went to wake him up since they were supposed to go for an outside catering job but found the doors locked from the inside and assumed that he was still asleep. Time went by up to later in the day but still had not woken up,” Muyundo’s mother Florence Muyundo, 74, is quoted as saying.
It was after breaking the doors that they found the body. An assortment of drugs and a soft drink were found at the scene by police from Kiminini Police Station.
The mother says since the July shooting, her son seemed disturbed, and had taken to heavy drinking. Muyundo had also been ailing. “My son has been sick for some time. First he had Covid-19 then blood clot problem and he has been on medication. The shooting incident only made things worse,” she is quoted as saying.
The businessman’s wife has reportedly travelled to the United States. Muyundo’s body is lying at Cherang’any Nursing Home mortuary as police conduct investigations.
