Siaya County disaster and emergency unit has embarked on a rescue mission of eight people trapped in a gold mine.
According to witnesses, 10 people were initially trapped when the mine which is located in Abimbo collapsed on Thursday, although two were rescued immediately.
“The shaft crumbled after the reinforcement on its walls collapsed,” David Orido, the site manager said.
He expressed optimism that they would rescue the eight with their workplan already in progress.
“We have already made arrangements to excavate the soil that is blocking the entrance of the shaft to enable us to rescue our colleagues,” Orido added.
Richard Karani, Bondo Deputy County Commissioner confirmed the incident, saying the two who were rescued are receiving treatment at a local health facility.
The police boss further noted that he was in touch with relevant authorities within Siaya to fast track the rescue mission.
