Eighteen people have been confirmed dead after a bus they were travelling in plunged into River Enziu in Kitui County.
Mwingi East Sub county Police Commander Mr Joseph Yakan who is on site says ten people have been rescued so far.
“Our divers have retrieved 17 bodies,” Yakan adds. Emerging reports indicate one more body has been retrieved, raising the death toll to 18.
The passengers, members of St Joseph Catholic Church in Mwingi East are said to have been heading to a wedding in Nuu.
According to the footage, the bus driver attempted to cross River Enziu which was full due to the ongoing rains. The crossover went south just as they neared the other side, when the bus lost control and plunged into the river.
Commander Yakan says they are yet to establish the number of passengers who were in the bus, even as the search for more bodies is ongoing.
