Man, 24, kills grandmother in her sleep, before hacking her cows, goats, donkey to death

Grief and shock engulfed Ruga village in Homa Bay County on Tuesday morning, after a man allegedly hacked his 70-year-old grandmother to death.

The 24-year-old man reportedly killed his grandmother – identified as Priscila Olumbe – using an axe, before killing five goats, three cows and injuring a donkey belonging to the deceased.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the man attacked the septuagenarian while she was sleeping at around 2 am.

It is alleged that he attacked her first with a panga and after the grandma collapsed, he picked an axe and continued to attack her with the deceased sustaining serious injuries on various parts of the body before dying on the spot.

According to the family, they suspect the young man might have developed a mental problem since he has been epileptic.

The suspect also attempted to attack the granny’s niece, a Class Seven pupil, who managed to escape through an open window.

Homa Bay County Police Commander Esther Seroney, confirming the incident, says the suspect is being held at Homa Bay Police Station, as investigations continue.

The body of the grandmother, who has been taken care of her alleged killer since he was a toddler, has been taken to Homa Bay County Referral Hospital morgue.
