Police gun down dreaded ‘Katombi’ gang leader in Mathare fierce shootout

DCI detectives on Monday evening shot dead a suspected criminal believed to be a leader of a gang that has been terrorising residents of Nairobi’s Mathare area.

The deceased, only identified as Ngaruiya, has been reportedly leading a dreaded group of criminals dubbed Katombi in executing a spate of robberies in Mathare and its environs.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) sleuths were alerted to a scene where five criminals had just attacked a pedestrian at gunpoint at 4 pm along Mau Mau Road in Bondeni.

Gang’s “Hideout”

Ngaruiya, alongside his counterparts, including one identified as Kabuda, reportedly made away with the victim’s phone.

The Starehe-based detectives embarked on a search for the criminals, who went on with their attacks up to around 6 pm.

“They ran towards different directions as Ngaruiya fired at the fast approaching detectives. In a sight reminiscent of a distillery plant, women who were busy distilling local brews along the river took flight, leaving drums of boiling froth & jerrycans of the highly potent spirit unattended,” DCI says.

The unrelenting Ngaruiya was fatally shot by the detectives, as his counterparts dived into the river, comprised of sewage water, and swam to safety.

DCI has issued a 24-hour ultimatum for them to surrender, “failure to which they will suffer dire consequences.”
