Meet David Kimani, 24, who sells Mukimo, Matumbo from his food truck in U.S.A

When David Kimani was four, his family emigrated to the United States. It was from this early age that the values of hard work were instilled in him.

“I saw my parents work days and nights doing odd jobs to make sure my brother and I had all we needed,” he says. “From a young age, it was instilled in me to always work hard for what I wanted.”

Among the things he wanted was to start a business. And start he did.

David Kimani’s Dream

Sahani Food Truck ’ is a restaurant-on-wheels based in Birmingham, Alabama.   “It started as a dream and turned into reality,” Kimani is quoted by a local news outlet Alabama News Centre as saying.

The dream was mused just before the coronavirus pandemic struck in January, 2020. In May 2021, David Kimani welcomed his first customers. Menu? Authentic Kenyan: Nyama Choma, Mukimo, Samosas, Ugali, Porridge, Mutura, Matumbo, Chips Masala and Chapo Smokie. Sahani Food Truck also serves American foods like burgers, quesadillas and Philly cheesesteaks.

“Being a young entrepreneur, it is great to feel the support not only from other local food truck owners, but also from people in the community,” Kimani says.

Thanks to the foundation accorded by his parents, Kimani studied hard in school. He says quality education for him and his brother was the main reason his parents decided to emigrate to the U.S. “Starting off in a top school system, I was able to go to a great university, get a great degree, and eventually get a great job.”

Data Analyst

David Kimani is a graduate of University of Alabama.

Besides running the food truck, Kimani is also a data analyst at Alabama Power.

“We have a lot of room to grow, but I also thank God every day for his timing and take each day as it comes,” he says.
