Irungu picks scientist Reuben Ngatia as running mate in Laikipia gubernatorial race

UDA Laikipia gubernatorial candidate Joshua Wakahora Irungu has unveiled his running mate.

Reuben Ngatia, a Nanyuki-based scientist and businessman, will partner with Irungu in a quest to unseat incumbent Ndiritu Muriithi. Speculation had been rife that Irungu would pick Woman Representative Catherine Waruguru who lost in the April UDA primaries. Former Laikipia East MP Mutahi Kimaru had also been mentioned as a possible running mate.

Irungu, who was the first governor of the vast county, said he decided to settle on a professional for the position, as opposed to a fellow politician..

Ngatia is a biotechnologist and a research scientist. He has a Masters degree in biotechnology. He exercises his professional skills through consultancies in process control, healthcare, public sector, and research institutions in the water and food processing industries.

Irungu says Ngatia bring in youthfulness, energy, and the desire for effective and continuous dialogue with all stakeholders.

Besides Waruguru and Kimaru, there were nine other possible running mates for the UDA candidate.

Other candidates in the gubernatorial race are Irungu’s former deputy Gitonga Kabugi (Narc-Kenya) and John Wakaba who is vying as an independent candidate.
